MEMORANDUM: You Are Mortal
Imagine you are in a time machine hovering over a villa in the Roman city of Pompeii. You hover there and observe the disaster as it unfolds.
I was at Pompeii this past summer. What a beautiful place for a town. Have you been? It's on an upper plateau with a clear and close view of mountains to the south, Vesuvius to the northwest and the sea stretching out the west. And it catches a breeze.
They had weeks of rumblings and knew what that meant. Most of the town had left. No now knows why some people either stayed or came back. To protect their belongings?

ReplyDeleteI have not yet been there. My son was there three summers ago. It is on my list.
