Humming Bird Vs. Mantis

I got my new National Geographic Magazine today.
When I saw this, I couldn't believe it. It made my blood run cold.

In Nam I kept a mantis tied near my bunk to eat offending insects.
I thought nothing of it. But this is creepy.

Yes a Praying Mantis will catch and eat a humming bird.

Here's an article that discusses another incident.

Now as you will read, some people wouldn't kill a mantis that was preying (rather than Praying) on their humming birds. I say shit on that. Kill the mother..........insect. Birds are more important than bugs on my scale of life, and humming birds are a special gift to our senses.
Dang!

If that is the logic you are using, then you should also kill cute little kittens, because they also eat birds. After all, cats are powerful predators that kill many animals we think are 'cute'. Where do you draw the line? What if an owl or hawk then kills the cat or kitten? Is one more important than the other? The mantis is only doing what it knows - how to survive. And considering the billions of tons of insects that birds eat, it's only fair that sometimes the tables are turned.
