Why We Fought! Cause and Comrades

My good friend ER, trying to show that even though he is of Southern Blood he supports Obama for President, went and opened those old saws about the brave and true southern soldiers and why we should honor their shibboleths and respect their sacrifice.

Well he got miffed and went and closed up his thread before I could put my 2 cent in on this continues canard.

You know ER, if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, but only weighs half as much as a duck, it is a canard.

So here it will be expounded upon just for the record.

First let me make clear I have ancestors and ancestral cousins and uncles and etc. Who fought and died and killed for both sides in the civil war. Family carrying my name had Farms burned north of Gettysburg and in the Shenandoah Valley. Family carrying my name are buried south of the R.R. tracks in the confederate section of the cemetery in Atlanta. Family carrying my name are listed on monuments on battlefields in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Our Family name was emblazoned on the sides of wagons pulled by Confederate horses full of Confederate supplies from farms run by my direct ancestors.

Secondly let me make clear. I am a combat veteran of the Vietnam War. I know what it feels like to have your service to you country degraded, ignored, and belittled. So I would never do that intentionally to any other soldier neither enemy nor ally.

That said, here is my point.
Both sides in the Civil War fought for their cause. Clear and simple. As always, soldiers on both side also fought for their buddies, and to stay alive.

To say that the Southern soldier fought for something other than the continuation of their way of life which demanded the enslavement of others is mystical bullshit.

McPherson admits that only 20 percent of the 429 Southern soldiers he examined voiced proslavery convictions, yet he defends his position by noting that "none at all dissented from that view"

It is time to put away these shibboleths of the South and move on into the 21st Century.
Yes they can be studied as history. But please not by those with an agenda.

Do we want change?
Well then this is one of those things that will have to change.

ER also remains nostalgic about the Southern Baptist church, a schismatic entity that existed solely to afford those who supported slavery the comfort of a religion telling them how right they were to do so. Irrational romantics rarely have any moral credibility, but are usually fun to have around.

It is most interesting that the 1970-80 schism in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has almost taken a large chunk of the denomination back to its ana-baptist roots. The group that broke off at the beginning of the Civil War and became the SBC has now split into a 40/60 set. The newly formed "liberal" (read most moderate) church association (The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship) is more integrated and accepting of "difference" than the old SBC and most certainly than their 60% brothers than spit at the mention of their existence these days.
Some day when I really want to get in trouble I'll dredge up the history of the SBC and the Black National Baptist denomination. But not here and now.

Just as an aside here is the CBF statement of Core Values:

By the way, because I know several of these people, the CBF has more than its share of mystics and gnostics. They have been there all along, but under this new regime they are thriving and not hiding as much as they have.

I agree!

Saying slavery was part of that is offensive to some people because they want the war to have been ALL about that and about that only. It was not. That's all I'm sayin'.

Armed hoardes cross the Red River, I might meet 'em about Goldsby. And I did, I'd be defending this country. And by definition I'd be defending every goddam immoral policy OF this country.

And in 150 years, some self-righteous son-of-a-bitch would insist that I fought in support of George W. Bush and his policies.

Well ER, back in Nam, and even today in letters and emails from Iraq, soldiers bitch about the stupidity of why they are there, even as they perform their duties.
But this writer is saying that he didn't find that in the Confederates letters.

"None dissented from that view," seems to be a strong argument against the classical view which you seem to, at least in a large part, hold. "A belief that the South would thrive as an independent nation, as well as defense of home and honor, have long served as the primary ideals that motivated Confederate soldiers in the minds of many."

The key to the American Civil War was that it was a war of ideology. Far more so than anything we did before or since. Without slavery there would have been no war. There would have been no reason for a war. Based on what this historian has shown, that fact was known, embraced, and held true right down to the lowliest foot soldier on both side.
That is a phenomenal thing.

Yes. It was a war over a couple of capital letters.

Were they united states? Or was it the United States? The war answered the question.

You know those Choctaws I studied throughly, and their Yankee parrons? In 1849-1850, when the Great Compromise(s) was being debatred across the land, the Choctaws out here on the frontier, and the New England native-and-educated missionaries working with them, were writing about one main thing:

Crap. If states secede, and THE UNION IS DISSOLVED, what will become of the treaties, since the party with whom we have treated will have ceased to exist?

The issue is clouded and nudged by the addition of states on an 'equal basis in the years prior;
clouded further after by reconstruction and the ultimate reaction to that. As far as bystanders "the Choctaws out here on the frontier,", a Nez Perce friend views the Civil War as his favorite.."white guys killing white guys.." It may well be that changing world mores would have ultimately ended the 'peculiar institution' whether the war have been fought or the south won.
